Ingredients

  • l½ cup of orange juice

  • juice of 1 small lemon

  • ¼ cup of honey

  • 5 cups of raw cranberries (frozen is okay)

  • 1 tablespoon of orange zest

  • a pinch of salt

  • a splash of cinnamon
  • a sprig of fresh rosemary or thyme for an (optional) garnish

Note: if you’re particularly sensitive to bitter flavors, you may want to leave the zest out.

Spike It – for an adult cranberry sauce, add a few tablespoons of spiced rum, cognac, or brandy!
Switch Up the Sweetener – if honey isn’t your thing (or you just don’t have any on hand), use maple syrup or monkfruit sweetener in its place.

If you like a less-tart cranberry sauce, try substituting half the cranberries with pitted cherries.

Nutrition Facts

The health giving properties of this fruit were recognized by Native American Indians, and early New England sailors are said to have eaten the vitamin C-rich wild cranberries to prevent scurvy.  They were recognized by the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans as a nutrient-dense fruit. Just an 8-ounce glass of cranberry juice cocktail contains 137% of the daily value of vitamin C.

Cranberries also contain Proanthocyanidins (PACs). PACs are unique bioactive compounds that are linked to a long list of health benefits, including:

  • Reducing incidence of certain infections
  • Promoting heart health
  • Protecting the urinary tract
  • Decreasing inflammation associated with chronic disease and aging.
